This afternoon I went on another hike in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to check out two other waterfalls that I have never seen before. The weather was perfect for hiking - mid-60s, low humidity and a slightly breeze blowing through the forest.
The trail I took follows a path along Spring Creek, which was no deeper than six inches in most places. The first waterfall along the trail is Blue Hen Falls. The waterfall is not very high or mighty, but it is very graceful and it fits well in its surroundings. The water flows over a small overhang and then cascades down the rocks below, forming a serene pool at its base.
About a mile down Spring Creek lies another waterfall, Buttermilk Falls.
Many people don’t know this waterfall even exists as it’s not listed on any of the park’s maps and the trail leading to it is unmarked and primitive in many parts. After crossing the creek several times, climbing over fallen trees and navigating my way up and down several steep embankments I finally reached Buttermilk Falls. I don’t know why the falls was named Buttermilk Falls, but it seems very fitting to me. The layers of rocks almost look like a tall stack of Buttermilk Pancakes, with a stream of syrup running down the side.
The hike to both of the falls and back is about 2.5 miles and it’s fairly easy in most places. For anyone who hasn’t been to see either of these beautiful waterfalls I highly recommend checking them out. It’s a great short and very scenic hike to take on a Saturday afternoon.
