The drama both on and off the set of Grey’s Anatomy has really heated up over the past few days. It started back in October when news of an on set scuffle between Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey hit the media. At first it wasn’t clear what the scuffle was all about, but in short time it came out that Isaiah had said something to the effect of “I’m not going to be your little faggot like…”. We were left speculating who the … was for a few days but in almost no time at all, T.R. Knight came out of the closet.
Over the past several months the story has been off the front pages and largely relegated to a few mentions here and there on the internet. That was of course until the Golden Globes this week. It started with some odd comments by Isaiah on the red carpet: “I love gay. I wanted to be gay. Please let me be gay.” And was further brought up in an interview after the awards.
“There is no way I could do anything so vile, and so horrible, not only to a castmate, but to a fellow human being. It’s the truth. It did not happen. I was going to hire some other great shiny publicist, but you know what, God laid it on my heart to say it because it was so close. The reports were all wrong. It did not happen. I’m very disappointed that the New York Post actually wrote legitimately about something that was put in a tabloid about some angry person to get some validity to this, and then it just rippled.”
Washington also insists that he and actor Patrick Dempsey are the best of friends: “I kiss Patrick Dempsey. We sing ‘Ebony and Ivory’ everyday since the so-called incident and it hasn’t come up. We purposely sing ‘Ebony and Ivory’ every night since October 9 and nobody has written about it.”
Shocked by his proclamation that it never happened, Knight’s co-star and best bud Katherine Heigl felt the need (and rightly so) to set the record straight.
“I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period. I’m sorry, that did not need to be said, I’m not okay with it…I have no idea what it was, I just find it hurtful…I just feel like this is something that should be very much in house we need to deal with and it’s among us and the cast and crew and among Shonda [Rimes, show creator] and the producers. I don’t think [Washington] means it the way he comes off…But, T.R. is my best friend. I will throw down for that kid. I will beat you up. I will use every ounce of energy I have to take you down if you hurt his feelings…I don’t see how [T.R.] could not be [hurt] under those circumstances. Drawing attention to it and saying the word again is just unnecessary.”
Following Heigl’s statement Knight went on Ellen today and confirmed that Isaiah did indeed call him a faggot.
I have to say that I find it absolutely appalling that ABC has not removed Isaiah from the show yet. He is creating a hostile work environment, using hateful slurs against co-workers and expressing no remorse for his actions. If the tables had been turned and someone had called him the N-word there is absolutely no doubt that they would have been fired on the spot.
I think that T.R. has handled the whole situation extremely gracefully. He was so nervous (and soo adorable) on Ellen today and it must have taken a lot of courage for him to stand up and defend himself. I also think it’s great how Katherine stood up for him. It’s great to see that he has friends who care about him so much and are so supportive.
No can we just get George to come out on the show and date Alex?

I find it so unfortunate that in the midst of all of this success the show is having, the cast members are in such a stupid squabble. They should be celebrating each other for the incredible work they are offering. If Isaiah Washington continues instigate all of these problems he should be removed. “Greys Anatomy” took home the People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Drama, as well as the Golden Globe!
